Why the Windy City? Chicago's famous nickname is The Windy City, but it wasn't dubbed this because of gusty winds. (Although Chicago does have its fair share of windy weather.) Local legend has it that a visiting reporter coined this phrase while reporting on the Worlds Columbian Exposition in 1893. He wrote that Chicago residents couldn't stop bragging about the town and called it the Windy City. More than a 100 years later, the name is still used to describe this city.
