The orthodontic alumni of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in association with the Brazilian Orthodontic Society presented the Professor José Édimo Soares Martins Award to Dr. Estélio Zen of Rio de Janeiro during the OrtoRio Premium Meeting in July in Rio de Janeiro. This award recognizes professionals who have contributed significantly to the orthodontic profession throughout their careers.

The Lebanese Orthodontic Society (LOS) held its scientific meeting in March 2000 in Beirut, Lebanon. Dr. Jacques Faure, the head of the orthodontic department at Toulouse University in France was the featured speaker for the program. The main topic of the program was "Straight Wire and Edgewise Philosophy: The Treatment Modalities of Class II." Fifty orthodontists were present at this meeting. At the end of the meeting, the society members designated Dr. Faure as an honorary member of the LOS, and Dr. Peter Riscallah as an honorary president of LOS.
