International
orthodontic journal editors attended conference in May
WFO Web site now provides forum for international
editors
Eighteen international orthodontic journal editors convened for
an all-day conference during the 101st AAO Annual Session in Toronto,
Ontario, Canada. The International Journal Editors' Symposium marked
the second meeting of these editors, who met last May during the
100th AAO Annual Session, the 5th International Orthodontic Congress,
and the 2nd Meeting of the World Federation of Orthodontists in
Chicago.
Since the first meeting, the WFO has established the Orthodontic
Journal Editors' Web Board, an online forum for editors, on its
Web site, www.wfo.org. This Web
Board gives editors the opportunity to correspond freely and exchange
information. As the Web Board evolves, it will also provide information
about the various orthodontic journals to scientists and authors
worldwide.
During the conference, the editors learned how to use the Web Board.
To access the Web Board, click on the "Information" link
on the home page of the WFO Web site. On the subsequent page, click
on the link "Journal Editors Discussion Board." The opening
page currently lists a number of international orthodontic journals.
The WFO will soon add links to the orthodontic journals' Web sites.
All Web-site users may access this portion of the Web Board.
Journal editors who have registered with the WFO may then select
the link to enter the editors-only section of the Web Board. International
orthodontic journal editors who have not signed up to have access
to this forum should contact Lorraine DuPont of the WFO Secretariat
for more information. Her e-mail address is ldupont@wfo.org.
"Once we use the online editors' forum more and more, we will
feel more comfortable with it," said Dr. Orhan Tuncay of Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, USA, coordinator of the meeting and editor of Clinical
Orthodontics and Research and Progress in Orthodontics. "It
will become a significant instrument in publishing."
After reviewing the new online service, the editors broke into
two groups to discuss editorial issues and challenges.
"Everybody who attended this conference is interested in supporting
and learning from each other," Dr. Tuncay said. "In the
process, we need to be aware of intellectual property issues with
the submitted manuscripts. Confidentiality issues are, in many ways,
against some of the things we would like to share. But, clearly,
everyone is interested in making authors' and readers' lives easier
than they are now."
At the conclusion of the meeting, the editors agreed to work on
templates for abstracts and case reports, which, once developed,
will be available on the Web Board. The editors will also post a
list of editorial referees and their areas of expertise. A link
to the American Association of Orthodontists' Orthodontic Glossary
will also soon be in place.
At this point in time, the editors are tentatively planning to
hold the next International Journal Editors' Symposium during the
6th International Orthodontic Congress in 2005 in Paris. In the
meantime, the Greek Orthodontic Society is hosting the International
Conference on Orthodontic Journals - A Forum of Editors, Authors,
Readers and Publishers on March 1, 2002, in Athens, Greece. Editors
of international orthodontic journals who wish to attend should
contact the Greek Orthodontic Society. The address is 95-97 Mavromichali
Street, GR-11472 Athens, Greece. The fax number is 30-1-3615432.
The e-mail address is info@grortho.gr.
"The information we exchanged is important for editors, editorial
boards and eventually the readers," said Dr. Efthimia Basdra
of Patras, Greece. Dr. Basdra serves on the editorial board of the
Hellenic Orthodontic Review. "I think people are very interested
and keep coming to these meetings. After the meeting in Greece,
there will be even more."
